FOSTERING INNOVATION THROUGH NEW IDEAS FOR LEO, MOON, MARS AND EARTH
In 2017 the European Space Agency initiated the Space Exploration Masters as main pillar to implement the goals of the ESA Space Exploration Strategy. The international innovation competition takes place annually with strong world-class partners and is carried out by AZO. Space exploration contains large potential for the creation of innovative applications, products and services, providing concrete opportunities to deliver benefits for society. As a global endeavour, Space Exploration fosters multilateral international cooperation. Investments in new topics and application areas may contribute to economic growth and new business opportunities, while countless unique values will be generated for science and knowledge. At the same time, Space Exploration addresses fundamental questions about the origin, uniqueness and destiny of humankind and thus may inspire and have wide cultural implications.
“I am convinced that the exploration and use of resources available in space will be the enabler for a large variety of new activities and businesses. It has the potential to reshape the whole space-related economy.”
Étienne Schneider, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Economy (Luxembourg)
ESA SPACE EXPLORATION PROGRAMME
Space is a key asset for Europe, providing indispensable technologies and services, and increases our understanding of our planet and the Universe. ESA’s vision positions space exploration as a global endeavour, which benefits society at large. The European Space Agency is pursuing an independent strategic planning process for consolidating a destination-driven space exploration strategy focusing on three priority destinations: low Earth orbit, the Moon and Mars. Each of those three destinations offers unique opportunities for gaining knowledge.
